Open Standards for Big Data and Artificial Intelligence
Abstract:
Open standards are widely accepted in the software open source community as a
means of rapid development of useful industrial solutions. Standards have a vital role in shaping
up the reuse of techniques in a technical discipline and contribute for scalable usage of the
technology aligned to the discipline. Reusable components and eventually solutions can be
developed due to standardization.
With the advent of Industry 4.0 and IoT, an increasing demand for Open Standards for
Big Data and Artificial Intelligence is being felt by the Digital & Cognitive Transformation
Industry. This paper shall focus initially on highlighting the list of Open Standards in Big Data &
AI. Gradually demonstrating some specific standards, we shall present facts and observations.
Based on these, we shall also derive some conclusions about the trends in Big Data and AI
technologies. The impact of open standards on the way we develop Big Data and AI solutions in
the near future will be discussed at the end.

What are Open Standards
Definition:
“'open' refers to it being royalty-free, while 'standard' means a technology approved by
formalized committees that are open to participation by all interested parties and operate on a
consensus basis. An open standard is publicly available, and developed, approved and
maintained via a collaborative and consensus driven process.” Several Definitions exist, but the
essence of all is ‘widely accepted standard free for use by the community as open source
software’.
