Lecture 16
International tourism is now one of the biggest industries in the world. Are the
problems that international travelers cause greater than the advantages they bring?
Body:
Despite the positive effects mentioned above, I believe that they are outweighed by
potential problems. Firstly, mass tourism has detrimental impact on pollution and local
natural environment. Clearly, as to meet the need for an influx of tourists, the vast number of
forests are being cut down to build parking lots, roads, hotels. As a result, this action
exerts enormous adverse influence on natural habitats. In addition, the frequent use of
transportation has led to an increase in carbon emissions which are one of the biggest causes
of air pollution. Furthermore, the growing number of tourists undoubtedly results in a
lowering of the quality of life of the inhabitants. As to fulfill the demand of
the excessive number of tourists, the prices of goods, infrastructure and housing have risen to
the point that making them less affordable for the locals.
Conclusion: In conclusion, although mass tourism has a number of benefits, I believe that
overall the disadvantages of this phenomenon are greater.
