Advantages, Economic impacts
 24% of GDP is from tourism industries
 $2.2 billion earned per year
 Job opportunities created, employment of 90,000 people 15.2% of
employment is in the tourism sector
 Income from tourism is used in social projects on better infrastructure and
telecommunications
Disadvantages
 Large depletion of resources from tourists 1.8 billion KWh, 80% of the energy
production in Jamaica is from imported fossil fuels emitting 2.98 metric tons
annually
 Loss of heritage and tradition such as Jonukonnu, an annual celebration with
parading and dancing
 Inappropriate behaviour of tourists
 Locals are having to have low paid jobs with an average pay of $430
compared to international workers / expats having higher paid jobs with an
average pay of $760 per month

 Building national parks and museums with entry fees for example Negril

 Ecotourism such as landscaping in Montego Bay making it more attractive
 Jamaica has assigned a tourism ministers, Edmund Barlett to ensure
sufficient management and leadership when approaching tourism
