This fun tooth decay experiment with egg shells is all about teeth and how to keep them healthy. We can’t experiment on our own teeth so are using eggs to represent them, as the shell of an egg is made of a similar substance to tooth enamel! Research Question: Can sugary or acidic beverages really weaken teeth? Objective: Since egg shells are similar to tooth enamel, examine examine egg shells soaked for 3 days in various beverages to see if the sugary and acidic beverages weaken tooth enamel. Materials: 5 Eggs 5 Plastic Cups Coffee Lime Fizzy drinks Vinegar Mineral Water Variables: control: independent: dependent: Observations: Conclusions: Hypothesis: Procedures: Label each cup with the type of liquids Put a raw egg into each cup Pour the same amount of fizzy drink, vinegar, lime water and coffee into your cups Leave for approximately three days (72 hours) Take the eggs out from cups Record your observations Questions: What happened to the egg shells that were soaked? Based on what happened to the eggshells in your experiment, which drinks do you think are best for your teeth? Why?
