The present day high-tech gear is just part of growing up in a digital
world. Nevertheless one cannot deny that all these gadgets have become
a part and parcel of our daily lives. Besides we have become highly
dependent on these devices. This is more so in the case of children. Their
lives are completely ruled by these devices.
These devices have many benefits. They have made our lives easier and
more comfortable. They have made the world jump forward with a
leap, and built up a glittering modern world. They have also opened
innumerable avenues for the growth of knowledge and have given a
definite form to the wild imagination of man. They have indeed
revolutionised every sphere of life.
Let us have a closer look at how these have helped evolved various
sectors and how these have impacted the overall health of our society:
Health Care
Several new hi-tech healthcare devices have been developed to
diagnose and treat different diseases. The treatments that earlier
seemed impossible have been made possible with these devices.
Education has now been made available online. Students can study
online via their tabs, mobiles or laptops. This has greatly benefitted
the physically challenged students as well as those residing in places
where there is a lack of Good Educational Institutes.
Instant communication with people living in different parts of the
world has been made possible at just a click of a button. Making a
video call and communicating with people staying in far-away
places has never been so easy and enjoyable.
Devices such as smartphones come with applications that guide you
during travelling. Reaching a new destination is no longer a hassle
Children born today are technology savvy almost right at birth. Kids as
young as 18 to 24 months use mobiles and tabs with great ease. Though
they learn a couple of things there too but overuse of it can lead to
some behavioral issues like Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity
Restlessness and Aggression.
Researchers have found that the negative impacts of gadgets and
electronic media outweigh the positive. Some of the significant impacts
of gadgets on children’s brain development and behavior are as follows:
1. Not good for the brain: Overexposure to gadgets has been
linked to Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD),
cognitive delays and impaired learning.
2. Language delay for toddlers: According to American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP), severe language delay is seen in children who
are overexposed to gadgets.
3. Less active play equals delayed development: Kids under the age
of 12 spend more time in front of a screen rather than
playing outdoors. This restriction in movement results in delayed
motor development.
4. Not good for bedtime: The late-night glow of laptops and mobile
phones are depriving children a good night sleep.
5. Not good for school: Being sleep-deprived doesn’t only affect
child development but also their performance in school.
6. Terrible child aggression: A study by the National Institutes
of Health found that the increase in use of modern technology can
break the old boundaries of family, values, behavior and
children’s well-being.
7. Kids suffer mental illness: A study of more than 1,000 children
between the ages of 10 and 11, found that children who spend
longer than two hours in front of a screen or another
entertainment medium are more likely to suffer psychological
8. Gadgets cause tantrums: Kids throw tantrums because they
get over attached to gadgets and can’t emotionally handle
themselves when these devices are taken away from them.
Last but not the least I conclude my words by saying the words of
‘Christian Louis Lange’
“Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master’’
