School Infrastructure Development Project (SIDP)
(Yernagudem Village, West Godavari Dist, A.P, India)
Introduction:
A school needs to have proper premises in order to welcome children. We see very
attractive walls and posters especially Kinder Garden and primary schools run by
the corporate schools. When we compare corporate primary schools and the
government owned primary schools, there is a vast difference between the
infrastructures created for these schools.
A typical government run primary school is free for children who can attend, as the
school is state owned and teachers fees are paid by the government. But premises
are unfortunately very basic. Most of the elementary schools have no benches /
tables / desks for children to site and to keep their books and they sit on the floor.
We can count on fingers the schools that have electricity or water facility at the
elementary school. Even the cleaning or sweeping is not done regularly. A child who
can attend the school and do not get a proper good primary education, his future
suffers as he is not competent enough in his school brought up.
These disparities to be minimized at the basic education system to improve the
competitiveness and meritocracy at the very beginning of the education system. In
order to encourage good education system at the government run schools,
especially at elementary level, there is a need for participation of the local
community people in improving the school infrastructure for betterment of their
children. Also, there is a need for voluntary organizations to gather support from
government and other sponsors to create necessary infrastructure to minimize the
disparities in the physical infrastructure of corporate schools and government run
elementary schools.
PARD realizes the need for greater participation of the educated youth and local
administration in improving the existing conditions or creating new infrastructure for the
schools to encourage and support the children mostly drawn from poor families to get
better education. As a pilot project, PARD is working on “School Infrastructure
Development Project (SIDP)” to improve the infrastructure for Government run
Elementary school at Kottapeta location in Yernagudem village, West Godavari District,
Andhra Pradesh, India.
