E.Q. All notes must be in the student’s own handwriting. Describe how the Sun, Earth, & Moon interact with each other. Earth rotates to the east- This is why the Sun seems to rise in the East and set in the West. Summer means the Earth is tilted toward the Sun. For example, when the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun it is summer but this means the southern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun which is winter. A misconception is that it’s warm because the Earth is close to the Sun but this is not true. It’s warm because the Sun is shining on the Earth more directly. Chunk the information on the right to form questions in this column. The Earth revolves around the Sun in 1 year or 356 ¼ days. Since the Earth is tilted and it revolves, this causes our seasons to change. The tilt is 23.5 The moon has 8 phases because it looks different from Earth when it changes positions. The first moon phase is always NEW moon. It is completely dark and is always between the Sun and Earth. The moon takes 29.5 days to orbit the Earth. It will go through all 8 phases during this time. The moon causes tides. Tides are when the depth of the ocean changes along the coast. A high tide occurs when the ocean appears to get deeper and the water comes inland. A low tide occurs when the ocean appears to get shallow and the water departs and goes out away from the coast. Summary Write a summary about the Sun, Earth, and Moon here. Make sure to use complete sentences and write a full paragraph, not just a few sentences.
