Restoring Stability in France • Foreign Minister of Austria, Metternich, leads the Congress of Vienna. • Distrusted the Revolution, • Prevent French aggression by surrounding it with stronger countries. – Contain France • Restore a balance of power. Legitimacy • France required to give up all territory gained under Napoleon. • All monarchs kicked out by Napoleon are put back into power • Fair treatment for all, no grudges. • Allowed peace until 1853 (Crimean War) Conservative Europe • Alliances form between Absolutist rulers. • Concert of Europe added to the alliance system, aid would arrive for any conflict between powers. • However, Enlightenment ideas were out there, and new philosophies emerge. • Constitutional Monarchy is maintained in England and France. • Russia, Prussia, and Austria maintained Absolutism. Political Changes Beyond Vienna • Three Philosophies Dominate. • Conservatism – A desire for absolute rule, or rule of a Monarch. • Liberalism – Wanted more rights, voting for the middle class and more power given to Parliament/Chamber of Deputies. • Nationalism – A pride for country emerges, and this would lead to conflict. Artifact Activity • Each group will receive a major period in French History, and they will have thirty-five minutes to construct an artifact that signifies that period. – – – – Rules: You cannot use any words Be creative! Do not let others know your Revolutionary Period, they must guess at the end of class. – This is worth a test/project grade – – You must stay with your group, any interaction with other groups will result in 5% deduction for each offense.
