Ancient China:
Be sure you know the following information for your test!
The test is on Thursday, February 25th
1. China is located on the continent of Asia.
2. China is an ancient civilization. A civilization is a group of people who share language,
science, agriculture and art.
3. The Great Wall of China was built to protect China against invaders.
4. The Great Wall of China was the longest structure ever built and can be seen from space.
5. China’s two main rivers are the Yangtze and Huang He (Yellow) Rivers.
6. The Pacific Ocean borders China.
7. The climate in China is that is has four seasons.
8. Chinese writing is made up of 40,000 different characters and symbols.
9. The Chinese follow a lunar calendar which is based on the moon.
10. The Chinese calendar uses animals to represent each year.
11. Ancient means existing long, long ago.
12. The Chinese invented many things that we use today. Some of these inventions are: kite,
compass, silk, fireworks, bronze.
13. The ruler of China is called an emperor.
14. Locate China on a map of Asia and know the Pacific Ocean borders it to the east:

Ancient Egypt:
1. Egypt is located on the continent of Africa.
2. Egypt is an ancient civilization. A civilization is a group of people who share language,
science, agriculture and art.
3. The Nile River and Sahara Desert are located in Egypt.
4. The Egyptians used the Nile River for transportation, trading with neighboring
countries; the land around the Nile is very green and lush, good for growing crops.
5. The climate in Egypt is very hot and dry.
6. Egypt was ruled by pharaohs.
Their bodies were preserved by wrapping them in linen.
These preserved bodies were called mummies.
The mummies were placed in coffins.
These coffins were placed in a large box called a sarcophagus.
7. Pyramids are the oldest stone buildings in the world. They were built for the pharaoh’s
tomb.
8. The Egyptians invented a 365 day calendar
and clock
which we still use
today.
9. The Egyptians wrote on papyrus using hieroglyphics (picture writing).
10. A Sphinx is a mythical creature that guards the Great Pyramid; it is half man and half
lion.
11. Ancient Egyptians used irrigation. Irrigation is a system where water is stored and then
used to water crops when needed.
12. Locate Egypt on a map of Africa.
