ADAPTING TO CHANGE! Middleburg Community Charter January 11, 2015 Ms. Browning and Ms. Morgan’s Class Newsletter Language Arts Word Study assessment Friday! Please practice sorting your words into their spelling patterns at home. A great way to strengthen your child’s fluency and expression is to re-read known texts. Have your child practice grouping the words into phrases rather than reading word-by-word. Social Studies We will continue the exploration of the Americas by describing the accomplishments of Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce di Leon, Jacques Cartier and Christopher Newport. Math We will continue to investigate fractions. We will also practice multiplication/division and addition and subtraction with regrouping concepts. Contact Information: Karah Morgan Karah.morgan@lcps.org Taryn Browning Taryn.browning@lcps.org Science We are investigating and understanding that environments support a diversity of plants and animals that share limited resources with a focus on water-related environments, dry-land environments, population and community. Project-based learning How can humans make choices to improve the quality of life for the animals in their care? For this week’s at-home assignment, the students will research one animal. They will investigate this animal’s needs and wants to survive within their ecosystem (please no domesticated animals such as dogs, cats, hamsters and guinea pigs). Some sample questions to think about are: Is your animal endangered? Where is your animal in the food chain? What does your animal do to protect itself from predators in the wild? You can use any means to display their findings – paragraph, poster, PowerPoint, video, etc. Remember: You will be comparing and contrasting the animal’s needs and wants in and out of captivity, so it is suggested that you select an animal that lives in both environments. For example, orcas living in the ocean and Sea World. Please start thinking about where you would find this animal under humans’ care – the zoo, aquarium, park, reservation. Since next week is a short week, part 1 will be due on Friday, January 22nd! Grasshopper and Frog Newsletter --Page 2 The Arts Happy New Year from PE!!! The next two weeks in physical education we will be in a gymnastics unit. I request that your child wear socks with their tennis shoes because we will be utilizing mats. With the mats, I ask the students to remove their shoes so we are not moving around on dirty mats. The mats will be sanitized daily. If your student forgets to wear socks, they will be unable to participate in the day's lesson. An alternate activity will be provided. Reminders to Students Don’t forget your take-home folder and agenda! Please remember to take your jackets and water bottles home. Please leave your Shopkins and HEXBUGS at home!
