TODAY’S OBJECTIVES:
Students will examine how the author’s purpose affects his/her
use of language and choice of form
AGENDA:
1. Analyze the importance of detail in determining
character. In groups, describe each of the
characters’ personalities: Eveline, her father, and
Frank. Predict what Eveline will do by the end of
the story, and justify your belief using clues from
the story. Read final paragraph from

“Eveline” by James Joyce and discuss result Did Eveline make the right decision?
Read non-fiction article about The Great Gatsby
and comment as a class.
Hand out The Great Gatsby and reading schedule
(See webpage). With partner, read descriptions of
East and West Egg (pp. 9-11) to gain insight into
the characters’ personalities.
a) Every Thursday, you are required to turn in ten
vocabulary words (handout) from Gatsby; use a
dictionary and/or thesaurus to find the following
items: definition, part(s) of speech, synonym(s),
antonym, use correctly in sentence
HOMEWORK/UPCOMING DUE DATES:
First Gatsby reading quiz will be this Tuesday, 2/2.
