Hours of Work: 36¼ hours per week, 5 days per week, 8.30am-4.50pm Mon-Thurs, 8.30am-4.25pm Fri. Location: Faculty of Engineering, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, University Of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham. NG7 2RD Reporting to: Senior Technical Manager Purpose of the New Role: To train as a Carpentry and Joinery Apprentice Technician within the Faculty of Engineering, providing technical support to researchers, students and academic staff within the University. Based within the centre for 3D Design, the role will gain a broad understanding of the various joinery subjects along with building techniques and processes available including both hand tool based skills through to complex machinery techniques. Training will progress in a specific skill area, while working at all times under the supervision of technicians. The role will attend suitable day release courses at a local training establishment. Main Responsibilities % time per year 1. Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of joinery processes and skills, while under the instruction of qualified technicians. 35% 2. Demonstrating learned skills and processes as the training period progresses. 30% 3. Undertake and complete suitable college courses throughout the training period with a view to completing a suitable level 4 (HNC) qualification or equivalent. 15% 4. Learn, understand and demonstrate the importance of the University’s Health & Safety policy 5% 5. Creating and maintaining a training log book over the duration of the apprenticeship period to record skills learned and projects worked on. 5% 6. Maintenance and general housekeeping of workshop and laboratory areas. 5% 7. Any other duties associated with the role. 5% Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience Qualifications/ Education Essential 5 GCSE’s including English, Maths, and a Science, grades A to C Desirable Five GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grades A – B, to include Mathematics, English and associated practical subject Skills/Training Good level of practical ability General computer skills. Experience Practical school level Technology work within a workshop environment. Basic understanding of construction techniques. Statutory/Legal Must satisfy the requirements for the Governments advanced apprentice scheme: http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/ Awareness of Health and Safety Decision Making i) taken independently by the role holder Set own high standard of work produced. Prioritise own workload Decide on different methods of production as training progresses. General joinery advice to research staff and students. ii) taken in collaboration with others Alterations and modifications to designs and materials to improve functionality, reliability and safety. Ordering of tools, parts, etc. within a limited budget. iii) referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder Major safety issues. Requesting annual leave. Reporting sickness.
