Trainee Technician (Apprenticeship) – Electrical Engineering

Contract Status:
This apprenticeship is available from September 2016 and will be
offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of four years.
Hours of Work:
36¼ hours per week, 5 days per week, 8.30am-4.50pm Mon-Thurs,
8.30am-4.25pm Fri.
Location:
Faculty of Engineering, Electrical Workshop,
Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham. NG7 2RD

Of
Purpose of the Role: To train as a Electrical Engineering Apprentice Technician within the
Faculty of Engineering, providing technical support to researchers, students and academic staff
within the University. Based within an electrical workshop, the role will gain a broad
understanding of the various electrical engineering subjects and techniques available including
installation of mains electrical supplies and lighting circuits to IET wiring regulations
BS3761:2008;installation and construction of safety interlock systems; construction of control
circuits. Training will progress in a specific skill area, while working at all times under the
supervision of engineering technicians. The role will attend suitable day release courses at a
local training establishment.

Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of electrical engineering
skills and techniques, while under the instruction of skilled engineering
technicians.

Demonstrating learned skills and techniques as the training period progresses.

Undertake and complete suitable college courses throughout the training
period with a view to completing a suitable level 4 (HNC) qualification.

Learn, understand and demonstrate the importance of the University’s Health
& Safety policy

Creating and maintaining a training log book over the duration of the
apprenticeship period to record skills learned and projects worked on.

6.
Maintenance and general housekeeping of workshop and laboratory areas.

7.
Any other duties associated with the role.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Qualifications/
Education
Essential
5 GCSE’s including English, Maths, and
a Science, grades A to C
Desirable
Five GCSEs (or equivalent) at
Grades A – B, to include
Mathematics,
English
and
Physics
Skills/Training
Good level of practical ability
General computer skills.
Experience
Practical school level Technology work
within a workshop environment.
Basic understanding of
engineering drawings.
Statutory/Legal
Must satisfy the requirements for the

Decision Making
i)

Set own high standard of work produced.
Prioritise own workload
Plan mains installations showing alternative layouts, varying from basic installations to more
complicated installations as training progresses.
General electrical engineering advice to research staff and students.
ii)
taken in collaboration with others
Alterations and modifications to designs and materials to improve functionality, reliability and
safety.
Ordering of tools, parts, etc. within a limited budget.
iii)
referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holder
Major safety issues.
Requesting annual leave.
Reporting sickness.
