TROY UNIVERSITY MASTER SYLLABUS SORRELL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS EMBA 5501 Survey of Business Concepts Prerequisites Admission into the EMBA program. Description An overview course of the business management field including the functional areas of accounting, economics marketing, finance, human relations and human resource management. Must be completed as a prerequisite by all students as a condition of entrance in the EMBA program. (Pass/Fail only) (Prerequisite course to EMBA program; not for credit in other degree programs) Objectives On completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Compare and contrast the major functional areas of business, including accounting, finance, management, marketing, information systems, and legal environment. 2. List and describe the major branches of management, including operations management, human-resource management, and management science. 3. Describe how business transactions affect financial-accounting statements. 4. Apply the concepts of supply and demand and competitive advantage to business scenarios. 5. Apply fundamental concepts of law, ethics, and social responsibility to business problems. 6. Describe the internal and external environments of business, including an evaluation of company strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. 7. Identify mission statements, strategic objectives, and organization-level strategies. 8. Demonstrate written communication skills appropriate to the profession of business. 9. Apply basic management, marketing, finance, and information strategies to business objectives in an apt scenario. Purpose To provide a survey of concepts needed in the EMBA degree program relating to the entire field of business management. EMBA introductory requirement. Master Syllabi are developed by the senior faculty in each business discipline. This Master Syllabus must be used as the basis for developing the instructor syllabus for this course, which must also comply with the content specifications outlined in the Troy University Faculty Handbook.
