a. Governance Statement Spotlight 6.2- Bystander Intervention Policy
The welfare of our students is of the highest importance to Missouri State University. There will
be times when individual students, both on and off campus, may be in critical need of assistance
from medical or other professional personnel. Missouri State University hopes that these students
will seek help and that other students or individual chapters will respond to obtain the help that
their fellow student needs. To that end, Missouri State University wants to minimize any hesitation
that students might have in obtaining help due to concern that their own behavior or chapter
behavior might be a violation of University policy.
While policy violations cannot always be overlooked, a University staff members will take into
consideration the positive impact of reporting an incident on the welfare of students when
determining the appropriate response for policy violations by the reporter of the incident. Any
possible negative consequences for the chapter or reporter of the problem should be weighed
against the possible negative consequences for the student who needs intervention.

student that is struggling through the grieving process. If you see that someone is in need of assistance,
please direct them to the Counseling and Testing Center. More information on grief and loss is available
athttp://counselingcenter.missouristate.edu/grief.htm
What to do if someone you know is experiencing grief and loss:
·
Understand that grief is a process . There is no right way to grieve -- each individual grieves in
his/her own individual way.
·
Natural reactions to loss can include: denial & shock, physical symptoms, mood changes,
emotional volatility, difficulty concentrating, sleep and appetite changes, guilt, depression.
·
This is a good time to use your support systems, friends, family.
·
It is helpful to maintain a balanced diet, get plenty of rest and exercise.
·
If you have difficulty coping after your loss, contact the Counseling Center (Counseling Center,
2015).
