iTeach on the Road: It’s the Teach, not the Tech!
Description
iTeach is a proven, intensive on-site clinic in online instructional methods covering the instructional process
from course creation to delivery and assessment delivered by 3-6 Instructional Designers. iTeach on the Road is
an opportunity to bring this training—traditionally only available at CDE or other central units—to remote
campuses.
iTeach sessions include training on:





The Understanding by Design framework for creating outcomes-based course materials
Effective use of Learning Management Systems and Elluminate Live! synchronous class delivery
Creating basic graphics, manipulating images, producing PDF files
Creating classroom community and fostering critical interactions with social software
Classroom management and assessment
Campus Opportunity
Throughout UA, instructional design/development support is centralized at the primary MAUs. Despite
cooperation between instructional designers across the state to coordinate methods and tools, opportunities for
instructors to receive intensive instruction and training are limited to a few events that can’t possibly meet the
demand. iTeach on the Road is an opportunity for all interested faculty at a campus to receive this beneficial
training, and for local development support staff to receive valuable train-the-trainer information and an
introduction to the growing statewide network of their peers.
Outcomes
Participants who attend the full suite of sessions can expect to leave with a significant portion of their course
materials conceptualized and implemented. The will be in possession of a solid foundation in the skills and a
toolbox of resources needed to continue development on their own in their local environment. iTeach includes
introduction and easy access to the statewide network of distance education designers and educators.
Participants
iTeach is built around hands-on activities using each participant’s particular materials adjusted—as much as
possible—to each participant’s level of comfort with technology. iTeach is not designed for “geeks” but for
educators with a practical knowledge of using the Internet and perhaps basic experience using Blackboard or
UAS Online to post course materials.
About iTeach
The iTeach workshop is entering its third year as an annual CDE activity, training a dozen faculty for five full
days. iTeach was explicitly conceived to promote a curriculum based on best practices that puts technology in
service of desired outcomes and understandings. Evaluations have been overwhelmingly positive. Here’s a
sample:
“I went last year and LOVED it! [...] I would love to go again. I was on the edge of my seat the whole week! I
would also recommend it to all full time faculty! The training is really that good.”
“Thank you so much for such a wonderful week! I learned so much!”
“... excellent organization of material that will be a great resource going forward.”
“...it was a pleasant surprise that this academy is not only going to deal with the technology of learning, but
the philosophy of learning as well. As someone without any formal education in teaching, it is very helpful.”
