GT Extensions for Math Investigations: Grade 2 – 3rd 9 Weeks GT extensions overlap with the regular extensions; however, these extensions address components of the GT Curriculum Scope and Sequence. These extensions are designed for gifted math students are as a means to extend lessons conceptually, through depth and complexity of process, or by providing a “ripple” effect that addresses the learning objectives and provides a preview of new skills. Additionally, some activities have been introduced that may substitute for an investigation if a pre-assessment such as preview data from the beginning of the year deems mastery of objectives in the investigation. The same objectives are addressed, however, the substitute activity is differentiated. Please consider time factors when using these extensions, particularly substitute activities, so that pacing is appropriately aligned with the pacing of investigations. Putting Together and Taking Apart Investigation 3 Finding the Missing Part Students show more than one way to solve a combining problem using progressively more complex number sets Students show more than one way to solve a separating problem using progressively more complex number sets Students write short stories for combining and separating situations that have more than one step using progressively more complex number sets (example: 5 + 8 + 22, 16 – 4 + 5) Students use colored pencils to mark patterns they discover on the hundreds chart Students create a legend for patterns on the hundreds chart. Students explain and reflect on their findings in writing. Partnered students use a number cubes to generate appropriate sized numbers to use to write math problems to solve. Students create their own two-step problems using progressively more complex number sets. Investigation 5 Addition and Subtraction Strategies Students work in small groups to challenge one another to determine the most ways to make 100. Investigation 1 Combining and Separating Investigation 2 Working with 100
