GT Extensions for Math Investigations: Grade 4 – 3rd 9 Weeks GT extensions overlap with the regular extensions; however, these extensions address components of the GT Curriculum Scope and Sequence. These extensions are designed for gifted math students are as a means to extend lessons conceptually, through depth and complexity of process, or by providing a “ripple” effect that addresses the learning objectives and provides a preview of new skills. Additionally, some activities have been introduced that may substitute for an investigation if a pre-assessment such as preview data from the beginning of the year deems mastery of objectives in the investigation. The same objectives are addressed, however, the substitute activity is differentiated. Please consider time factors when using these extensions, particularly substitute activities, so that pacing is appropriately aligned with the pacing of investigations. Packages and Groups Investigation 1 Multiplication Tables Investigation 2 Double-Digit Multiplication Investigation 3 Multiplication and Division Choices “Another Pattern” (p. 7) Students create 20 by 20 or 24 by 24 multiplication tables and examine the patterns of multiples larger than 12 “Multiple Patterns” (p.10) “Comparing Numbers in Multiple Towers” (p.14) Session 3: “Multiple Plaids” Students conduct independent research on the use of multiplication in industry using an online search engine, such as Google, and personal interviews. Students synthesize and share findings. Students Students create and display the results of a survey in which they explain the cluster problem strategy to adults and question adults about: the usefulness of this strategy whether they understand the strategy whether they find it easier to use than the strategy they learned in school Students create multi-step, multi-operational story problems for Choice Time “Which Numbers Have Many Factors” (p. 55) “Students Secret Numbers” (p. 66) coupled with peer reviews.
