Names
1. Los Angeles Biodiversity Survey
2. Purpose-The purpose of this lab is to compare levels of biodiversity in different areas of Los Angeles County.
Questions:
a. How many species are located in your two chosen areas?
b. How can you explain the difference in biodiversity in the two chosen areas
3. Hypothesis (predictions)
a. I predict that…
b. I predict that…
4. Materials: use bullet points
5. Background:
Area-Length x width
Species-A distinct group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring.
Biodiversity-The number and variety of organisms in a given area.
Quadrat-A square measuring area used to sample living things in a given site.
6. Procedure
1.Chose two sites with your group.
2. Mark off a quadrat (make sure the area of your two quadrats are equal).
3. Count the number of species within your quadrat. Include all organisms: mammals, birds, plants,
insects, fungi, etc.
4. Collect one small sample of each plant species and store it in between the pages of a book.
5. Record your observations
