. Why is biodiversity important to
Humans
- It is evident that humans rely on the environment for our survival, and the
environment exhibits Biodiversity, which is fundamental and beneficial
for improving the quality of human life. Humans benefit from the biodiversity
of the environment in that it produces a variety of products that meet our
needs for survival, such as food (plants and animals) from the environment
and some supply of food that is produced from the cultivated crops, shelter
and warmth provided by the woods that can be used to build houses and wool
to be used for clothes to provide warmth that is essential due to the changing
conditions of the environment, specifically the climate, as well as variety
of medicinal plants that allow the experts to conduct researches to verify its
efficacy and use as cures for diseases. Furthermore, it also provides clean
and drinkable water, fertile soil for crop vegetation and breathable air.
The productivity of natural and agricultural systems
- The biodiversity of the Earth contributes to the natural and agricultural
systems' production by serving as an agent of productivity as well as pest
control and regulation agency, to avoid the destruction of productivity within
the environment. Species of bats, insects, and birds act as pollinators, which
contribute significantly to biodiversity through germination of plants and
flowers and assure a diverse range of crops produced. Furthermore, predator
animals and parasites regulate various pests in the environment and assure
the flow of energy, which is an important aspect in the food web. Furthermore,
there are decomposing agents in the environment such as bacteria and fungi
that enable the return or recycling of organic material from deceased living
species to the soil to be digested and consumed by other organisms for
survival.
Evolution
- Genetic diversity is the level of biodiversity that ensures the diversity of genes
within an individual which contributes significantly on the evolution of different
organisms, which has a significant impact on the evolution of various
organisms. Genetic variety ensures natural selection within species of
organisms in a population and produces diverse qualities of an organism that
contribute significantly to the organism's survival and reproduction ability to be
handed down to the next generation of that specific organism.
