COURSE OUTLINE SPEED READING JAMIE LINDSEY ROOM 803 Course Description: This course will focus on helping students develop a rapid reading rate with comprehension. Students will understand and develop a direct relationship between their rate of reading and their extent of comprehension. In addition, students will also learn how to adjust their reading rate and their entire reading attack to the type of material and the purposes for which they are reading. Course Objectives: Students will learn how to read actively and rapidly Students will learn how to assess material difficulty Students will determine their purpose for reading varied selections Students will apply directed reading techniques for recall and retention Course Materials: Various materials will be used in class. They will include handouts, class projects, textbooks, newspapers, magazines etc. Assignments: Assignments for Speed Reading will focus on the following: Skill Builder Mini-Lesson Timed Practice At least two grades will be taken each week from the above activities. Assessments will be given each Friday. Grading Policy: The following grading scale will be used to determine grades. 90-100 – A 80-89 – B 70-79 – C 60-69 – D Below 60- F Make-Up Work: Students will be expected to complete all assignments on time and to the best of their ability. In-class activities are assigned in order to reinforce what has been taught, to prepare students for upcoming lessons, and to help students develop organizational skills and responsibility. Students who are absent have one day for every day they are absent to complete the assignment. Late work will be accepted up to two days past the due date with a 10% penalty. No more than three assignments per semester will be accepted late. Student Conduct: Schools must be a sage place where all students can learn and where all students are treated with respect by peers and adults. Students are expected to follow the class discipline plan they received the first day of class.
