This unit standard is for people working in top making or semiworsted processing. People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the operation and function of gilling machine components; and set-up a gill for safe and efficient processing of sliver or top.

Explanatory notes

1 Plant safety practices comply with Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and workplace procedures.

2 Workplace productivity and quality requirements will be met.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of gilling machine set-up.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Gilling machine set-up conditions are calculated according to machine specifications and workplace practice.

Range draft, sliver weight calculation, ratch, sliver tension.

1.2 Fibre and sliver properties are described in terms of their effects on processing and product quality.

Range fibre length, fibre distribution, sliver evenness.

Fibre types used in the workplace are identified and their performance in gilling described.

Outcome 2

Prepare gill for operation.

Evidence requirements

Adjustments are made to gill according to plant safety procedures.

Gill is clean and condition of faller bars meets machine operating requirements.

Input creel is loaded with number of slivers or tops specified in work instruction.

Gill settings produce processed fibre specified in work instructions.

Range ratch, draft, autoleveller, speed, coiler, break detectors, metre counters, bump and ball formation.

2.5 Equipment for applying moisture and additives is operating and set according to plant procedure.

2.6 Instrumentation and control installed on equipment in the workplace are set according to plant procedure.

Run gill to optimise machine settings.
