This unit standard is for people working in the steel
manufacturing sector.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: carry out
steel quality operations; service and tap oxygen blowing
machine (OBM); and maintain stock levels for floor operations.

Definitions
Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s
manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process.
OBM refers to oxygen blowing machine.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991.

This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment.

Carry out steel quality operations.
Evidence requirements

Temperature tests meet company documentation for number and timing.

evidence of a minimum of two tests is required.
Samples sent to laboratory meet company documentation for number and
timing, and technical process specifications.

Service and tap OBM.
Evidence requirements
2.1
OBM servicing tasks are carried out to company documentation.
servicing tasks include but are not limited to – lances cleaned,
tapholes cleaned and reblocked.

2.2
Steel is tapped with minimum spillage and skulling.
2.3
Tapped steel flow strikes the ladle target.
2.4
The amount of slag in the ladle is minimised in accordance with company
documentation.
Outcome 3
Maintain stock levels for floor operations.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Maintenance of stock levels is carried out in accordance with company
documentation.
3.2
Maintenance of stock levels enables production schedule to be achieved.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
