NZQA registered unit standard 9289 version 3 Page 1 of 3 Title Rectify steel slab surface for rolling Level 3 Credits Purpose 20 This unit standard is for people working in the steel manufacturing sector. People credited with this unit standard are able to: inspect steel slab surfaces; rectify surface defects; and adjust slab size. Classification Steel Manufacturing > Steel Making Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definition Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process. 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991. 3 This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Inspect steel slab surfaces. Evidence requirements 1.1 Slabs are inspected to reveal any defects to technical process specifications. Range defects include but are not limited to – cracks, slag inclusion. 1.2 Slabs are inspected both before and after scarfing in accordance with company documentation. 1.3 Slab surfaces are inspected in accordance with grade specifications. 1.4 Any out-of-specification slabs are dealt with in accordance with company documentation. Evidence requirements 2.1 Any defects are scarfed in accordance with company documentation. 2.2 Slabs are check-scarfed for inspection in accordance with company documentation. Outcome 3 Adjust slab size. Evidence requirements 3.1 Size adjustment enables the steel rolling schedule to be achieved. 3.2 Slab sizing meets customer’s specifications for size tolerances.
