Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are, for a factory trawler fish filleting
machine, able to: explain how to adjust the infeed system, the bone guides,
the fin erectors and back guides, and the chain and belt drives; and describe
adjustments required to allow for wear to spike chains and sliding blocks.
This is an introductory unit standard for people working or intending to work
in a seafood processing plant aboard a fishing vessel.

Candidates are required to demonstrate skills and knowledge relevant to two
different fish filleting machines for assessment against this unit standard.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Explain how to adjust the infeed system of a factory trawler fish filleting machine.
Performance criteria
1.1
The explanation is consistent with the factory safety procedures.
1.2
The explanation of belt tensions adjustments is consistent with the normal
operation of the machine, and in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
1.3
The explanation of transport and conveyor chain adjustments is consistent with
normal operation of the machine, and in accordance with manufacturer’s
instructions.
1.4
The explanation of guide and knife adjustments to align with machine centre is
consistent with the normal operation of the machine.
Element 2
Explain how to adjust bone guides of a factory trawler fish filleting machine.
Performance criteria
2.1
The explanation is consistent with the factory safety procedures.
2.2
The explanation is consistent with the manufacturer’s instructions.
2.3
The explanation includes adjustment to allow for wear.
2.4
The explanation includes adjustment for height and level.
Element 3
Explain how to adjust fin erectors and back guides of a factory trawler fish filleting
machine.

The explanation includes indicators for belt replacement, which are consistent
with factory operational procedures, and manufacturer’s instructions.
Element 6
Describe adjustments required to allow for wear to spike chains and sliding blocks of a
factory trawler fish filleting machine.

6.1
The explanation is consistent with the factory safety procedures.
6.2
The explanation is consistent with the manufacturer’s instructions.
6.3
The explanation includes adjustment and replacement of spike chains and
sliding blocks to allow for wear.

unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
