Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: weld stainless steel in a
trawler fish processing factory; explain how to repair trawler fish processing
factory systems by replacing parts; and demonstrate knowledge of trawler
fish processing factory electrical systems.
This is an introductory unit standard for people working, or intending to work,
in a seafood processing plant aboard a fishing vessel.

Assessment against this unit standard will take place in a real or simulated situation.
In either case, there must be a Safe Ship Management Plan, which complies with
Maritime Rules Part 21.

Element 1
Weld stainless steel in a trawler fish processing factory.
Performance criteria
1.1
Welding is carried out in accordance with the Safe Ship Management Plan.
1.2
Weld complies with legislative requirements.
Element 2
Explain how to repair trawler fish processing factory systems by replacing parts.
Range
pneumatic system: filter, ram, oiler, hose, pipe, valve;
water reticulation system: three of – hose, filter, valve, nozzle;
hydraulic system: filter, ram, motor, hose, valve, fluid;
conveyer system: bearing, bush, sprocket, belting, wear strip, motor roller.
Performance criteria
2.1
The explanation of the repair by replacement is in accordance with the Safe
Ship Management Plan.
2.2
The explanation of the repair by replacement is in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions.
Element 3
Demonstrate knowledge of trawler fish processing factory electrical systems.
Performance criteria
3.1
Demonstration includes a description of electrical safety precautions required
when working on a trawler fish processing factory within the requirements of the
Safe Ship Management Plan.

3.2
Demonstration includes the testing of electrical components in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions.
Range
components – limit switch, proximity switch, solenoid coil;
testing equipment – multimeter, voltage detector, magnetic probe.
3.3
Demonstration includes a description of the normal operation of limit switches,
proximity switches and solenoid coils.
3.4
Demonstration includes the repair by replacement of components, in
accordance with the Safe Ship Management Plan and manufacturer’s
instructions.

authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
