Characteristics and needs may include but are not limited to: age and stage of development, culture, disability, gender, health status, language, sexual orientation, and needs for physical comfort, safety, and privacy. Ethical standards for social service research include ethical standards prescribed by local or national ethics bodies governing the research project. Key people include but are not limited to people within a family or whānau, hapū, iwi, group, agency or organisation who are given the authority or mana to speak on behalf of those people by virtue of their position, expertise, or knowledge. In the context of this unit standard, it is expected that where a community of locality is the focus, key people will include those identified from a cross section of stakeholders that include individuals, agencies and organisations that provide services to the community of locality. Participants is used as a generic term to denote people who are the subjects of research. They may be referred to by various descriptive terms in the range of social service settings. Purpose for social service research includes description, development, explanation, or evaluation of: social service concerns, issues, or needs; social service theory; social service practice effectiveness; social service policy, programmes, services, or structures. One purpose for social service research is required for award of credit in this unit standard, from any combination of these factors. People awarded credit in this unit standard demonstrate competence in one research method. 3 People awarded credit in this unit standard show that their actions are guided and supported by valid theory for social service practice. Evidence is required of social service theory that is derived from authoritative sources, which may include but are not limited to: body of knowledge related to social service work; cultural theory; practice research. Elements and Performance Criteria element 1 Implement the plan for a social service research project. performance criteria 1.1 Materials are prepared to conduct the research according to the research method(s) in the research plan. Range: materials may include but are not limited to - interview sheets, questionnaires, recording sheets. 1.2 Sources of information are accessed according to the research plan. 1.3 Information is gathered, recorded, and stored according to the research method(s) defined in the research plan. Range: 2.5 matters relevant to the research plan include but are not limited to - research topic, research statements, research design and research method(s), information gathered, analysis of research data, conclusions. Research reports are provided to participants, key people, and other stakeholders according to the research plan and any requirements from funders of the research. Range: aspects of the research project - definition of research topic and research statement; identification of sources of information; literature review; the purpose and role of the researchers; research design; information gathering; recording of information; analysis of information; reporting of research findings. 3.2 Evaluation of the research project analyses the research findings for validity. 3.3 Evaluation of the research project analyses the appropriateness of the research project to the participants' characteristics and needs. 3.4 Evaluation of the research project analyses the degree of compliance with ethical approvals and ethical standards for social service research. 3.5 Evaluation of the research project incorporates evaluation by participants where this has been negotiated with participants.
