Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of and locate the marine species common to a dive
site.

Critical health and
safety prerequisites
Unit 4384, Scuba dive and perform rescues in open water to a
maximum depth of 18 metres or Unit 4383, Snorkel dive with
safety, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
Explanatory notes
1
Industry technical and safety criteria are specified in the training manuals of the
agencies approved by the Sport Fitness and Recreation Industry Training
Organisation (Sfrito).

All workplace diving practice must comply with the requirements of the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992 and Health and Safety in Employment Regulations
1995. All practice must also comply with Accident Rehabilitation and Compensation
Insurance Act 1992 and the Occupational Safety and Health guidelines for
Occupational Diving.

All training providers assessing against any instruction diving unit standard must
ensure that the training is conducted by a qualified instructor currently registered with
one of the listed agencies: National Association of Underwater Instructors,
Professional Association of Diving Instructors, Scuba Schools International,
Confédération Mondiale des Activitiés Subaquatiques, International Diving Educators
Association, or an equivalent, determined by Sfrito, that meets the requirements of
the Recreational Scuba Training Council, the instructor must provide training in
accordance with the standards and procedures of the respective training agency.

Five types of fish common to the dive site are identified.

Five types of flora and fauna common to the dive site are identified.

Research of marine species identifies food chains, habitats, survival, and
breeding habits of marine species common to the dive site.

Locate marine species at the dive site.

Diver observes marine life using minimal movement.

Logged observation identifies and locates fish common to the region.
2.3
Logged observation identifies and locates flora and fauna common to the
region.
