Classification Diving > Diving - Recreational Available grade Achieved Entry information Critical health and safety prerequisites Unit 4384, Scuba dive and perform rescues in open water to a maximum depth of 18 metres, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Explanatory notes 1 Industry technical and safety criteria are specified in the training manuals of the agencies approved by the Sport Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation (Sfrito). 2 At night means between 1 hour after sunset and 1 hour before sunrise. 3 All workplace diving practice must comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995. All practice must also comply with Accident Rehabilitation and Compensation Insurance Act 1992 and the Occupational Safety and Health guidelines for Occupational Diving. 4 All training providers assessing against any instruction diving unit standard must ensure that the training is conducted by a qualified instructor currently registered with one of the listed agencies: National Association of Underwater Instructors, Professional Association of Diving Instructors, Scuba Schools International, Confédération Mondiale des Activitiés Subaquatiques, International Diving Educators Association, or an equivalent, determined by Sfrito, that meets the requirements of the Recreational Scuba Training Council, the instructor must provide training in accordance with the standards and procedures of the respective training agency. 5 The buddy system is where snorkel divers dive in pairs while maintaining contact with each other at all times. Evidence requirements 1.1 Lighting equipment selected meets industry criteria. Range 1.2 Potential night diving hazards are described according to industry criteria. Range 1.3 primary, back-up, chemical. lack of light, adverse environment, equipment unfamiliarity, light failure, buddy separation, disorientation. Night dive site selected meets industry safety criteria. Range access, environmental conditions, hazards. Outcome 2 Perform a night dive. Evidence requirements 2.1 Entries to and exits from the water maintain orientation and buddy contact. Range off boat and/or offshore. 2.2 Ascents and descents with reference are completed without losing orientation or buddy contact. 2.3 Communication with buddy and team members is achieved using hand signals and dive lights. 2.4 This unit standard is expiring Buddy contact is maintained throughout the night dive. 2.5 Route is navigated by compass and/or natural phenomena. 2.6 Personal dive lights illuminate dive site. 2.7 Light failure drill meets industry technical and safety criteria. 2.8 Night dive practice meets industry technical and safety criteria. 2.9 Identification of nocturnal aquatic life meets industry criteria.
