Purpose
This unit standard is intended for people working in a dairy
farm, and recognises the knowledge and skills required to
assist with the operation and maintenance of a dairy effluent
management system.

Definitions
Dairy effluent refers to faeces, urine, washdown water, spilled milk, soil, feed
residues, detergents and other chemicals, and stormwater from the fairy dairy and
feed pads.
Workplace procedures refer to the written and verbal instructions to staff on effluent
system operation, maintenance, and record keeping, which must meet the
requirements of current legislation and bylaws.

manufacturer’s specifications and workplace procedures.

Maintains records of operation in accordance with workplace procedures.
1.3
Handles and manages livestock in the farm dairy to minimise defecation.
1.4
Minimises water use in the farm dairy according to workplace procedures.

Identify and correct operational problems associated with a dairy effluent management
system.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Monitors a dairy effluent system in accordance with manufacturer’s
specifications and workplace procedures.
2.2
Identifies common operational problems in a dairy effluent system.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.

to this standard are outlined in the CMR. The CMR also includes useful information about
special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training
programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special
resource requirements.
