NZQA Expiring unit standard 3779 version 7 Page 1 of 4 Title Control machine directional up and down warp over extended periods during fibreboard production Level 4 Credits 10 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to produce board with 2% or less machine directional (MD) warp over extended periods, and manage excessive MD warp. Classification Fibreboard Packaging > Fibreboard Manufacture Available grade Achieved Entry information Critical health and safety prerequisites Unit 340, Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in the printing and graphic pre-press industries, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Recommended skills and knowledge Unit 3776, Produce fault free fibreboard on a double backer and platen section during long production runs, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Explanatory notes 1 All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Resource Management Act 1991, Privacy Act 1993 and their subsequent amendments. 2 Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the equipment and/or workplace. 3 ‘Machine Directional’ is abbreviated to ‘MD’ where it occurs in outcomes and evidence requirements. 4 The process for defining and calculating warp percentages for the purposes of assessment is as follows: when a warped board is laid on a level surface so as to form a shallow arch, the maximum vertical deviation from the horizontal is expressed as a percentage of the board dimension that forms the arch. Warp is assessed at take-off, and thus excludes ‘post-warp’. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard 3779 version 7 Page 2 of 4 5 ‘Extended periods’ are defined within this unit standard as periods up to one hour's duration, and including several paper changes per period. 6 ‘Actions available’ where listed within this unit standard can be taken in any combination or sequence which is in accordance with workplace practices and equipment specifications and configuration. 7 Where referred to, ‘excess misalignment’ is defined in double faced board as: the edge of the single face web being aligned more than 5mm from the edge of the bottom liner at operator side; and, in twin cushion, where all three edges (of both single face webs and the bottom liner) fail to align within a 5mm spread at operator side. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Produce board with 2% or less MD warp over extended periods. Evidence requirements 1.1 Awareness of forthcoming paper changes is demonstrated. Range 1.2 checking production documentation, communication with other corrugator crew members, identification of possible equipment adjustments. Proactive corrective actions available in the workplace for the double backer and platen section are described and/or taken in anticipation of paper changes. Range changes in paper grade, type, width, and any combination; tension control actions – cleaning of hot plates, adjustments to any or all of double backer liner preheater brake, bridge single face preheater brake, bridge brake, double backer liner brake, paper lubrication systems, paper guides, bridge single face vacuum; double backer liner preheater wraps, hot plate temperatures, main belt pressures. 1.3 The effects of the corrective actions available in 1.2 are explained in terms of workplace practices and equipment configurations. 1.4 Procedures to be followed where all double backer and platen section actions are unsuccessful are explained in terms of workplace practices. Outcome 2 Manage excessive MD warp. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard 3779 version 7 Page 3 of 4 Evidence requirements 2.1 MD warp warning is immediately responded to in accordance with workplace practices. 2.2 MD warp is reduced within one minute of receipt of a first MD warp warning. 2.3 MD Warp is reduced to 2% or less within one minute of any second MD warp warning. 2.4 Board is produced free of faults to meet the requirements of the job. faults are defined as – excess misalignment, delamination of any type, flute damage or deformation of any type, board damage of any type. Range 2.5 Where all available actions at the double backer and platen section have failed to reduce MD warp to 2% or less within one minute of any second MD warp warning, joint corrective action with other corrugator crew is taken in accordance with workplace practices. Range immediate verbal advice to other crew, clear verbal definition of the problem, clear verbal definition of the joint action agreed.
