This entry level unit standard is for people who are employed in
the smallgoods area at meat processing plants.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify the
operating requirements of packaging equipment; set up a
packaging line; and comply with organisational and statutory
hygiene and safety requirements in a smallgoods
manufacturing operation.

Definitions
Operator – the candidate being assessed against this unit standard.
Organisational requirements – instructions to staff on policies and procedures which
are documented in memo, electronic or manual format and are available in the
workplace.
Smallgoods – smoked, cured or otherwise processed meat based products such as
bacon, ham, sausages, continental meats and salami lines.
Packaging – refers to cartons, boxes, formed containers, bags.

Outcome 1
Identify the operating requirements of packaging equipment in a smallgoods
manufacturing operation.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Packaging line equipment and accessories are identified in accordance with
organisational requirements and the purpose of each item of equipment in the
line.

Potential equipment faults are identified and remedial action is explained in
accordance with operating requirements.

Set up procedure for packaging equipment is completed in accordance with
organisational requirements, and the purpose of each step and task is
explained.
2.2
Routine equipment checks are conducted in accordance with manufacturer’s
specifications and organisational requirements.
Range
checks include but are not limited to – identifying common
mechanical and electrical faults and malfunctions in the packaging
line equipment.
2.3
Product specifications and descriptions are verified to ensure conformity in
accordance with organisational requirements.
2.4
Weight controls are set and adjusted and weighing procedure checked to
achieve product specifications in accordance with organisational requirements.
