Assessment Report Standard Format July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008 PROGRAM(S) ASSESSED : African & African American Studies Program ASSESSMENT COORDINATOR : Dr. Paul Griffin YEAR ____4______ of a _____5_____YEAR CYCLE 1. ASSESSMENT MEASURES EMPLOYED I conducted telephone interviews with two of AFS graduates during this period. One remains employed at Wal-Mart and the other is completing a Ph.D. study at Indiana University in Sociology, with a focus on African Americans. AFS also reviewed and approved one Senior Research Project paper. Mr. Iotha Roberts--the graduating senior--presented and defended this paper on May 16, 2008 before AFS faculty, students, staff, and others. 2. ASSESSMENT FINDINGS The graduate was to have knowledge of the history of the African American experience; knowledge and ability to research and properly interpret extant sources; knowledge of the impact of race and racism on Black life; knowledge of ways to be successful despite the obstacles of race and racism, economic poverty, and other social problems one may encounter; knowledge of significant African American figures; knowledge of how to effectively communicate through both writing and speaking. Based on telephone interviews with two graduates and the Senior Research project, it is clear that AFS is reaching its goals. 3. PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS None planned at this time. 4.
