Assessment Report Standard Format July 1, 2006 - June 30, 2007 PROGRAM(S) ASSESSED African and African American Studies ASSESSMENT COORDINATOR Paul R. Griffin YEAR 3 of a 5 YEAR CYCLE 1. ASSESSMENT MEASURES EMPLOYED Briefly describe the assessment measures employed during the year. I was unable to reach two of our graduates--Edmund Hill and Byron Thomas--to do a survey of how their careers are going two and five years after they respectively graduated. Although he was not a part of planned survey for this time and hence was not interviewed, a third graduate— Samuel D. Ewing—is completing his Masters in history here at Wright State University. The main challenge is reaching graduates and\or getting them to respond. What was done? Who participated in the process? What challenges (if any) were encountered? 2. ASSESSMENT FINDINGS List the objectives and outcomes assessed during the year, and briefly describe the findings for each. Inability to reach the two graduates left AFS unable to conduct an assessment. If contact had been made, then the following Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes would have been the focus: 1. OBJECTIVES of the program. All graduates will have knowledge of the history of African Americans in this country. All graduates will have learned how to communicate the history of African Americans, verbally as well as in written form. All graduates should be aware of the ever pressing importance of higher education, especially for persons of African descent. Graduates will be prepared to assume roles of leadership and informed citizenry in our society. Graduates will possess an academic background that will prepare them for employment. 2. LEARNING OUTCOMES of the program. All AFS graduates will have 1 knowledge of the history of the African American experience knowledge of and ability to use various methodologies to study the experience ability to research and properly interpret extant sources knowledge of the impact of race and racism in black life knowledge of ways to be successful despite the persistent obstacles of race, racism, economic poverty, and social injustice. knowledge of significant persons and ideas in the African American experience. 3. PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS List planned or actual changes (if any) to curriculum, teaching methods, facilities, or services that are in response to the assessment findings. None planned. 4. ASSESSMENT PLAN COMPLIANCE Explain deviations from the plan (if any). 1. Inability to reach graduates during this assessment period requires another effort this year. 2. Obviously since there were no graduates this year, there were no senior research papers or exit interview. 5. NEW ASSESSMENT DEVELOPMENTS Describe developments (if any) regarding assessment measures, communication, faculty or staff involvement, benchmarking, or other assessment variables. None. 2
