ASSESSMENT MEASURES EMPLOYED Briefly describe the assessment measures employed during the year. What was done? Who participated in the process? What challenges (if any) were encountered? A student worker in the program contacted AFS graduates. Some of the phone numbers had changed, and there were no new phone numbers available for those individuals. 2. ASSESSMENT FINDINGS List the objectives and outcomes assessed during the year, and briefly describe the findings for each. Graduates were expected to have 1) Knowledge of the history of the African American experience 2) Knowledge and ability to research and properly interpret extant sources 3) Knowledge of the impact of race and racism on Black life 4) Knowledge of ways to be successful despite the obstacles of race and racism, economic poverty, and other social problems one may encounter 5) Knowledge of significant African American figures 6) Knowledge of how to effectively communicate through both writing and speaking. These graduates did acquire these types of knowledge. The African and African American Studies program was beneficial and helpful to them in providing knowledge and abilities. 3. PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS List planned or actual changes (if any) to curriculum, teaching methods, facilities, or services that are in response to the assessment findings. 1) The African and African American Studies program has been revised in anticipation of the semester conversion; these changes affect the major, the minor, and two certificate programs connected with African and African American Studies. 2)The African and African American Studies Program is the sponsor or co-sponsor of several events, including “Side by Side: The Story of the 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone” (November 2, 2010), a film showing and discussion of Traces of the Trade: A Story From the Deep North (November 4, 2010), and a reading by Marlon James, The Winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize in Fiction (November 8, 2010). The African and African American Studies program was also involved with a book discussion on Marlon James’s The Book of Night Women (November 3, 2010). The AFS program will be one of the sponsors for an upcoming visit by Charlayne Hunter-Gault in 2011. 3)Dr. Opolot Okia, an assistant professor in the department of history, has been added as AFS participating faculty. 4. The AFS program is not planning any assessment developments.
