Online Program by AFS Intercultural Programs Changemaker STEM edition WEEK 1 WORKSHEET In partnership with: AFS GLOBAL YOUTM CHANGEMAKER - STEM edition | ONLINE PROGRAM Module 1: Welcome & Introductions Welcome, Changemaker! AFS and the Center for Social Impact Strategy at the University of Pennsylvania have partnered to create an engaging online program that invites you to explore cultural differences, practice social innovation, learn about sustainability, and take action in your community! Let’s look at what you will accomplish during these next 12 weeks. ● You will enhance your personal growth and self-awareness by reflecting on your own community and culture, as well as the cultures of your peers from around the world. ● With this foundation, you will then take a deep dive into social innovation terms, theory and approaches, cultivate self-awareness for impact, and adopt the role of an observer in your community. ● Finally, while considering sustainability and the impact of climate change, you will discover, design and develop a social innovation project. What does this mean exactly? It means you will create a prototype of intervention in your community. Once you have this prototype, you will then test it out within your community and get feedback on how it can be improved. Finally, you’ll present your project plans through a 3-5 minute presentation. By the end of this course, you will receive the Advanced Certificate on Global Citizenship for Social Impact from AFS and the Center for Social Impact Strategy at the University of Pennsylvania. We are so excited to start this journey with you, and invite you to embark with courage and curiosity! © 2022 AFS INTERCULTURAL PROGRAMS, INC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED AFS GLOBAL YOUTM CHANGEMAKER - STEM edition | ONLINE PROGRAM Module 1: Welcome & Introductions Community Agreement You will engage with fellow 15 to 17-year-olds from around the world in this course mainly through the forums and Live Sessions. Let's look at our community agreement: ▶ Put your intercultural skills to use by respecting diversity! The forum is a brave space for people of all races, genders, sexes, ages, sexual orientations, religions, disabilities and socioeconomic statuses. This is an opportunity to learn about and listen to individuals’ unique perspectives. Offensive language, jokes, and comments targeted to individuals’ social categories and identities will not be tolerated. ▶ Activity participate! Take responsibility for your own learning. Participate in the activities and forums. Learn from your fellow Changemakers, read their comments and ask them questions! Practice asking questions if there is something you’d like to understand better or know more about. Stay curious! ▶ Try to demonstrate a non-judgmental and open-mindset among your fellow Changemakers and facilitators. This means trying to refrain from judging or critiquing someone else’s perspective and instead, reframe it as a question when you’d like to engage in dialogue. ▶ Stay present! We recommend putting away distractions during the sessions and closing other internet browsers and chat windows. ▶ Be brave! Since this is a brave space, what is expressed in the forums and during the live sessions should be kept in those spaces. © 2022 AFS INTERCULTURAL PROGRAMS, INC. Sustainability Sustainability means to last indefinitely, or in a broader sense: to meet our current needs of the moment without jeopardizing the needs of the future. Sustainability is commonly said to have three main pillars: Social, Economic, and Environmental. When one of these three pillars is not considered in a solution to a problem, then that solution is not sustainable and is ultimately not the answer to the problem. For example, many projects or innovation ideas related to climate change address environmental sustainability, but often do not consider social and economic aspects. Can something be sustainable if it does not make economic or cultural sense for a community? What are some examples of sustainability you are aware of? Brainstorm here and then share in the Bridge Forum. © 2022 AFS INTERCULTURAL PROGRAMS, INC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED AFS GLOBAL YOUTM CHANGEMAKER - STEM edition | ONLINE PROGRAM Module 2: Why Global STEM? In the first portion of the activity we look at emissions of CO2 over time and how that correlates to global temperature averages. ● Was any of this information new to you or surprising? How do you feel when you see this data? In the second portion of the activity we look at different projections for temperature change based on the level of action taken to limit emissions. ● Was any of this information new to you or surprising? Active Global Citizens engage in open, appropriate and effective interactions with people from different cultures and take an active role working with others to make the world more just, peaceful, inclusive, secure and sustainable. CHANGEMAKER A person who pursues individual and societal transformation through openness, creativity, and empathy. SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP An approach to solving existing problems that utilizes innovative processes, pursues financial sustainability, adopts an impact orientation, and has the potential to scale. A social entrepreneur is a changemaker who relentlessly pursues the development of novel solutions to existing problems. SOCIAL IMPACT The net effect of an activity carried out by an individual, organization, or institution (e.g. business, NGO, government) on individuals, families, and communities. Importantly, inaction on the part of individuals, organizations, and institutions can also lead to a social impact. Social impact may be positive, negative, or neutral. SOCIAL INNOVATION 1. A novel solution to a social problem that is more effective, efficient, sustainable, or just than existing solutions, and for which the value created accrues primarily to society as a whole rather than to private individuals. (Professor Frumkin uses this definition from Phills, Deiglmeier, and Miller in his video.) 2. An attempt to purposefully create social impact by acting on accumulated knowledge to address uncertainties related to the problem space, the mission and strategy, and/or the resources and capabilities that individuals and collectives seek to address and mobilize. (Adapted from Seelos and Mair) SUSTAINABILITY To last indefinitely, or in a broader sense: to meet our current needs of the moment without jeopardizing the needs of the future. © 2022 AFS INTERCULTURAL PROGRAMS, INC.
