In three years our productivity has risen from 11.68 in F07/S08 to 18.84 in
F09/S10; our average class size has grown from 25 to 39.48.

Criteria 4: Percent of Full-Time Faculty in comparable Department at other
Colleges:
The Child Development Program is unique to Merritt College; we are
the only college in the district that can request this faculty position.
Criteria 5: Position is Authorized and in the Budget:
This position would come from the general fund. We had one faculty, Dr. Cynthia
Whitfield, retire in 2007 and one faculty, Dr. Stacy Thompson hired as the
permanent Div. 1 Dean in 2008.
Criteria 6: Upon justification to the District, a College may be granted a
faculty position to start a new program or to enhance an existing one.
We are making revisions to a transfer degree designed to meet the requirements
of AB 1440. We will submit it to the Curriculum Alignment Project for statewide
alignment.
We have submitted a contract education proposal to City of Oakland Early
Headstart for Spring 2011. In 2010, we taught six contract education classes to
two Headstart agencies; these contract education classes have generated
$82,000.00 in revenues for the district.
There is a possibility that First Five will expand its support of the cohort model
program for the child development students which would require additional work
from the department.
An additional full time faculty position would create more cohesion in this
complex department and strengthen our capacity to build these new programs
and expand our contract education program.
Criteria 7:
We currently have two full time contract instructors. We have lost two full time
instructors in the past two years. We are requesting 1 full time faculty; the
consistency of full time instruction will improve our ability to develop and
maintain:
1) our curriculum and programs (we have 7 certificates, an A.A. degree,
bilingual classes, 2 learning cohort programs and run a lab practicum

preschool. Currently, we are submitting our CHDEV transfer degree for
statewide alignment).
2) our commitment to community and state partnerships ( Child Development
Training Consortium, CARES /First 5, California State Mentor Program,
Bananas Resource & Referral agency, CDC Merrittworks, Early Headstart
with two contract education programs)
3) and better meet student needs and college mandates.
The two full time faculty carry a full load of classes.
