Formerly offered as BUS 248UL
.5 units, .5 hours lecture (GR or CR/NC)
Entry-level business skills: Office decision making,
interpersonal relations, time management, interpersonal
communication, team building, increasing environmental
health in the workplace, and the job application process.
0514.00
S09
The course is intended to address soft business
skills needed to prepare students for success in the
workplace, e.g. interpersonal communication,
customer service, working “green”, and professionalism. Summer session 2008 was highly
successful (3 sessions averaging 75 students
each). Due to that success and word of mouth,
schools and city departments in Emeryville and
Berkeley have requested this program. It is being
institutionalized to reach a broader community base.

THE REPRESENTATION OF IMMIGRATION IN

4 units, 4 hours lecture (GR or CR/NC)
Acceptable for credit: CSU
Survey of immigration and cinema: Divergent ways
immigrants and immigration have been represented in
US cinema and television, historical and contemporary
examples in relation to the history of US immigration
policies, and public debate about immigration. Focus is

may be studied for purposes of comparison. 1599.00
S09
This course surveys several contemporary and
historical cinematic and televisual representations of
immigrants and immigration in order to discern the
cultural importance of these products and these
media makers. If they are acquainted with the
history of US immigration policies and the major
issues within contemporary immigration debates,
students will be better able to evaluate the politics of
representing these important groups and the
diverse experiences that they have had in the US.
This course will add additional diversity and depth to
our Humanities program.

There has been an extremely positive student
response to a one-unit meditation course at UC
Berkeley and other schools. We believe this is
evidence of serious student interest in meditation
and this course will meet the needs of a diverse
student body. It will help students improve
concentration, and potentially enhance academic
performance. There is also evidence that meditation
reduces addictive behavior, reduces incidences of
stress related disease, and enhances creativity.
This course will expand the Humanities/ Philosophy

The names of these courses are
being changed so students may
identify the topics by the
standard nomenclature of the
profession. The original names
were generic at the time the
courses were developed; these
are the preferred and more
easily recognized terms for the
21st century. These changes are
being processed now to simplify
student enrollment in Spring
2009. There will be a large
substantive change package in

changes in the degrees themselves, plus additional streamlining of the program.

Justification: This degree is a second degree to replace the more generic and no longer allowed Liberal Arts-General Studies

Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Arts and Humanities
Associate in Arts Degree Program
The A.A. in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Arts and Humanities provides students with a broad perspective on culture and
artistic expression of human beings and societies. It is designed to stimulate appreciation for and understanding of values,
ideas, and artifacts of culture and society, specifically as these relate to how different cultures through the ages have
responded to themselves and the world around them through the production of creative forms of expression. Critical
thinking skills and self-understanding through these courses provide a framework for lifelong study in liberal arts. Successful
completion of the curriculum in Arts and Humanities offers students a breadth of knowledge that could be focused into
single discipline degrees as well as applied to an interdisciplinary degree. The degree is intended for students who are
considering transfer but have not decided on a major; students who are required to complete a degree for job promotion; or
students who wish to further their education and obtain a college degree that is interdisciplinary in focus. In all cases,
students should consult with a counselor to develop their own program of study.

HISTORY OF GARDENS AND GARDENING
3 units, 3 hours lecture (GR or CR/NC)
Acceptable for credit: CSU
Historical evolution of gardens from the earliest
cultivation of plants by humans to the present day: History
of the theory and practice of garden design, horticulture,
and cultivation of plants (both useful and ornamental),
and of the artistic, social, philosophical, and literary
contexts of garden-making through the ages;
examination of the lives of people who have contributed
to the creation of gardens by designing them, creating
and cultivating plants to grow in them, writing about them,
and depicting them in art, literature and music. 0109.00
S09
Many students, especially those pursuing the
design track in Landscape Horticulture, have been
asking for a course for some time covering the
history of gardens and gardening in order to
deepen their understanding of how garden design
and practice have evolved over time. Since
gardens are deliberate human creations, the class
will of necessity be a history of the theory and
practice of garden design, but it will also be a
history of horticulture, of the cultivation of plants
(both useful and ornamental), and of the artistic,
social, philosophical and literary contexts of gardenmaking through the ages. Course is offered only by
Merritt. Offered as a selected topic, Lanht 48PA,

This course continues a series of courses under
this rubric on the natural history of selected areas
of California, and in particular preserves generally
not open to the public. All previous courses under
this heading have had high student interest and
good enrollments. Current students in our field
natural history program have suggested this new
course as an appropriate subject and have
expressed great interest in taking it when offered.
This region is one of the most pristine areas of the
state of California. Its wildlife includes herds of
pronghorn antelope, pika, mink, river otters, ringtailed cats, and over 100 species of birds. In
addition, this preserve is close to the Great Basin,
which has a diverse herptofauna and flora. Course

Merritt Biology and Environmental Studies over the
past 20 years have successfully offered five
different Natural History of Rivers courses (Green
River-twice, Colorado River in the Grand Canyon,
Tuolumne River, Middle Fork Salmon River, and
Rogue River). A course on Idaho’s Selway River
has never been offered. This is perhaps the
ultimate wilderness river experience in the Lower
48 States. The Selway offers limited access and
supreme opportunities for learning about the
ecology of a pristine and free-flowing river system
in the rugged Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area of
the Rocky Mountains in northern Idaho. Prior river
courses students have expressed keen interest in
taking this course. Course is offered only by Merritt.
