NZQA Expiring unit standard 3875 version 7 Page 1 of 3 Title Shrink a panel repair in the motor body industry Level 2 Credits 2 Purpose This unit standard is for people who are at pre-employment level or who have recently started work in the motor body industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of procedures for shrinking a panel in the motor body industry; prepare to shrink a panel; and shrink the panel in the motor body industry. It is assumed the policy also meets product manufacturers' specifications, recommendations, and standards. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of procedures for shrinking a panel in the motor body industry. Evidence requirements 1.1 Purpose of shrinking a panel is identified according to company policy. 1.2 Principles of shrinking a panel are identified according to manufacturer‘s specifications and company policy. Range 1.3 hot and cold shrinking, electric shrinking. Safety precautions required when shrinking are identified according to company policy and manufacturer’s specifications. Evidence requirements 2.1 Area to be shrunk is identified. Range 2.2 Tools and equipment are selected to enable the job to be carried out according to company policy. Range 2.3 sight, feel, file. may include but is not limited to – hammers, dollies, disc sander, body and slapping files, oxy – acetylene welding plant, abrasives, mallet, copper coated carbon rod, power cables, electric welder. Related damage is straightened according to company policy. Outcome 3 Shrink the panel in the motor body industry. Evidence requirements 3.1 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task. Range 3.2 Area is shrunk and reduced to the same contour as the original shape of the panel according to company policy. Range 3.3 hot and cold shrinking, electric shrinking. Area is metal finished so the shrunk area blends in with the surrounding panel contours and shapes so as to reveal no irregularities. Range 3.4 personal safety, safety to others, tool, equipment and machine safety. sight, feel. Tools and equipment are put away after use, and the work area is clean.
