NZQA Expiring unit standard 3876 version 7 Page 1 of 3 Title Fabricate a new panel in the motor body industry Level 2 Credits 5 Purpose This unit standard is for people who are at pre-employment level or who have recently started work in the motor body industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of fabricating a motor body panel; prepare to fabricate a motor body panel; and fabricate the motor body panel. Classification Motor Industry > Vehicle Bodywork Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 The following legislation (and subsequent amendments) is applicable to this unit standard and must be followed where applicable: – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 2 Unit standard applies to fabricating any two of the following: hatch panel, sill and pillar, door frame and skin or any other panels relevant to the workplace using mild steel and/or aluminium. 3 Company policy includes workplace standards, practices, and procedures, which must comply with current legislation requirements. It is assumed the policy also meets product manufacturers' specifications, recommendations, and standards. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of fabricating a motor body panel. Evidence requirements 1.1 Purpose of fabricating a panel is identified according to company policy. 1.2 Principles of fabricating a panel are identified according to manufacturer‘s specifications. Outcome 2 Prepare to fabricate a motor body panel. Evidence requirements 2.1 Template is made, and the panel is marked out according to specifications. 2.2 Marking out equipment is used safely and without damage to equipment. 2.3 Marking out on the panel is legible and all dimensions are accurate according to the specifications. 2.4 Tools and equipment are selected to enable the job to be carried out to company policy and specifications. Range may include but is not limited to – hammers, dollies, disc sander, body file, oxy-acetylene and/or MIG welding plant, snips, hacksaw, files, folding, wheeling, rolling equipment, guillotine, measuring and marking equipment. Outcome 3 Fabricate the motor body panel. Evidence requirements 3.1 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task. Range 3.2 personal safety, safety to others; tools, equipment and machine safety. Metal is cut to size according to specifications. Range guillotine, snips. 3.3 Metal is shaped and folded according to specifications. 3.4 Welding is carried out according to the specifications and company policy. Range 3.5 oxy-acetylene and/or MIG. Panel is fabricated according to specification with no irregularities that impair painting. Range dents, file or deep sanding disk marks, rough welds, uneven swage lines.
