Purpose
This unit standard is for people who are at pre- employment
level or who have recently started work in the motor body
industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
demonstrate knowledge of finish coats in the motor body
industry; prepare to apply finish coats of paint in the motor body
industry; and apply the paint to the panel in the motor body
industry.

1
The following legislation (and subsequent amendments) is applicable to this unit
standard and must be followed where applicable:
– Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992
– The Dangerous Goods Act 1974 and Regulations
– The Spray Coating Regulations 1962
– Approved Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Isocyanates.

Company policy includes workplace standards, practices, and procedures, which
must comply with current legislation requirements. It is assumed the policy also
meets product manufacturers' specifications, recommendations, and standards.

Kinds of finish coats are identified according to paint manufacturer’s
specifications.
Range

Mixing, thinning and using instructions are identified and explained according to
paint manufacturer’s specifications.

Safety precautions required when using finishing coats are identified and
explained according to paint manufacturer’s specifications, legislation
requirements and company policy.

Prepare to apply finish coats of paint in the motor body industry.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Panel to be painted is clean and prepared according to paint manufacturer‘s
specifications.
Range
2.2
dust, dirt, wax, silicone polishes and moisture air borne
contamination, key for the paint to stick.
Adjacent areas needing protection are identified and protected according to
company policy.

masking tape, masking paper, plastic.
2.3
Spray gun is selected to enable the panel to be painted, and set up and
adjusted for the type of paint according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
2.4
Paint is prepared according to the manufacturer‘s specifications.

thinning, straining.

Apply the paint to the panel in the motor body industry.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Requirements of legislation and manufacturer’s specifications which relate to
applying paint are identified and complied with.
Range
3.2
personal safety, safety to others, workshop, vehicle, tools and
equipment safety.
Air pressure is selected for the type of paint being used and the paint
manufacturer‘s specifications.

3.3
Paint is applied according to the paint manufacturer’s specifications.
3.4
Drying time is observed according to the paint manufacturer‘s specifications.
3.5
Surface is free of dirt, runs, dry spray, heavy orange peel and uneven coating
when dry.
3.6
Tools, and equipment are clean and put away and the work area is clean.
3.7
Materials are stored according to manufacturer’s instructions and legislation
requirements.

replaced by unit standard 21711 and unit standard
21696.
