Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: make ready the single or two colour sheet-fed offset printing press for four colour process work; print four colour process sheet-fed offset work on a single or two colour press; and undertake post press tasks.

Critical health and safety prerequisites

Prerequisite: Unit 3714, Make ready and print two or more colour close register sheet-fed offset work , or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Explanatory notes

1 All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment

Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments.

2 Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace.

3 Jobs undertaken for this unit standard must include work for a minimum sheet size of

A3, and work must be carried out on a single or two colour sheet-fed offset press.

4 Candidates undertaking this unit standard must provide evidence of normal colour vision. Further information on PrintNZ Training’s policy for colour vision can be obtained from PrintNZ Training, PO Box 31131, Lower Hutt 5040.

Make ready the single or two colour sheet-fed offset printing press for four colour process work.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Sequence order of inks is determined to meet the job requirements.

Range trapping, ink tack, absorbency and surface of substrate, dot gain effects, areas of critical register, final colours required.

1.2 Make ready is carried out for four colour process work.

1.3 Quality of tonal values and secondary colours produced meets the job requirements and customer specifications.

Outcome 2

Print four colour process sheet-fed offset work on a single or two colour press.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Four colour process work is printed to meet requirements of the job specifications.

Range may include, but is not limited to – proofs, progressives, customer standards, company standards.

2.2 Production standards are maintained throughout the print runs.

Outcome 3

Undertake post press tasks.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Quantity printed is checked against job documentation before wash up is commenced or plates are removed from cylinder.

3.2 Any discrepancies in quantity are rectified or reported in accordance with workplace practices.

3.3 Job documentation is completed in accordance with workplace practices.

Range may include, but is not limited to

– job sheets, time sheets, electronic data storage.

3.4 Printed substrate is prepared for forwarding to the next production process.
