Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of factors affecting printing standards; follow start
up and shut down procedures for the equipment being used;
print single colour work in both black and coloured ink; check
job is complete before wash up; and undertake post-press
tasks.

printing press for single colour work, or demonstrate equivalent
knowledge and skills.

Explanatory notes

All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice,
and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for
personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the
obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment
Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments.

workplace.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Machine start up and shut down procedures are followed during the print run in
accordance with machine operating manual, workplace practices and
Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
2.2
Potential hazards for the equipment being used are identified by the learner and
reported in accordance with workplace practices.
Outcome 3
Print single colour work in both black and coloured ink.
Range
work to be to a minimum sheet size of A5;
work to include halftones.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Single colour work is printed to meet the specifications of the job documentation
and ensuring that production standards and quality are maintained throughout
the run.
3.2
Feeder and feedboard are monitored and adjusted as required to suit the
substrate requirements.
3.3
Side lay and head lays are monitored and transfer system adjusted as required
to ensure that registration is maintained.

Plate and impression cylinder or platen are monitored and adjusted as required
to suit requirements of the job.
3.5
Control of ink colour, condition and inking system are monitored and
maintained.

ink density, mixing, matching; ink additives, transfer of ink to plate
and/or type.
3.6
Delivery section is monitored and adjusted as required to ensure that a level
stack is produced.
3.7
Printed sheets are flagged to the bindery’s requirements or subsequent
production processes as determined by the job documentation.
3.8
Faults encountered during the print run are reported or rectified in accordance
with workplace practices.

faults – spots, set-off, ghosting, over or under impression, slur,
show-through, ink contamination, bleeds, creasing, static, colour
variation, coating build up.

Check job is complete before wash up.

4.1
Quantity printed is checked against job documentation before forme is lifted and
wash up is commenced.
4.2
Discrepancies in quantity are rectified or reported in accordance with workplace
practices.

Undertake post-press tasks.
Evidence requirements
5.1
Job documentation is completed in accordance with workplace practices.

5.2
Amendments and variations are noted on job documentation for future
reference.

Post-press tasks are carried out as required by the job specifications and in
accordance with workplace practices.
