NZQA registered unit standard 1630 version 7 Page 1 of 4 Title Ride thoroughbred racehorses at raceday Level 4 Purpose Credits 45 This unit standard is for riders who hold an Apprentice Jockey's Licence permitting them to ride thoroughbred horses on official racedays. People will be working under broad guidance with full responsibility for their work routines. Classification Equine>Equine Care Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Demonstration of competency must be consistent with: Workplace procedures Industry standards New Zealand Rules of Racing Standards set by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Inc, in particular, for safety gear Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 Code of Welfare: Horses and Donkeys available at http://www.mpi.govt.nz. 2 Competency for this unit standard can only be achieved in the context of a commercial business operation under normal working conditions. 3 All raceday activities must be carried out in accordance with the New Zealand Rules of Racing. 4 In order to ride thoroughbred racehorses in a carded race on a racetrack, an official New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Stipendiary Steward must be satisfied that the rider is proficient and all activities have been carried out in accordance with the New Zealand Rules of Racing. 5 A rider can only be assessed after riding in at least 3 previous occasions to the satisfaction of the Stipendiary Steward. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare for raceday. Range: may include but is not limited to - employer, employer stand-in; may be in writing 1.4 Determines race track details and racing conditions, and race form of other horses in the field. Outcome 2 Check scratchings, weigh-in on arrival at the races, and describe the consequences of being overweight. Evidence requirements 2.1 Obtains official scratchings. 2.2 Presents self at nominated riding weight. 2.3 Describes the consequences of being overweight. Outcome 3 Meet with the owner or trainer to obtain riding strategy and colours. Evidence requirements 3.1 Obtains details from the owner or trainer on the horse’s characteristics, race pattern, preparation, and riding strategy. 3.2 Informs the owner or trainer of riding weight. 3.3 Receives colours for racing and understands procedures for riding in club colours. 3.4 Describes procedures to follow with variations to riding weight or club colours. Outcome 4 Prepare for racing, ride the horse in the race to the finishing post, and carry out post-race procedures. Evidence requirements 4.1 Undertakes pre-race preparation including pre-race safety check and procedures in the bird cage. Primary Industry Training Organisation SSB Code 101558 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 1630 version 7 Page 3 of 4 4.2 Rides horse in the race, implementing race tactics which encourage maximum performance and opportunity for the horse within the NZ Rules of Racing. 4.3 Identifies and corrects problems associated with horse’s performance. 4.4 Carries out post-race procedures from race finish to return to the birdcage, and reports to the owner and/or trainer. 4.5 Maintains a record of race rides. Outcome 5 Comply with the New Zealand Rules of Racing on raceday to maintain safety and integrity. Evidence requirements 5.1 Applies the relevant rules of the New Zealand Rules of Racing while on course on raceday. 5.2 Understands the consequences of riding outside the New Zealand Rules of Racing.
