This unit standard is intended for people who are required to
ride thoroughbred racehorses for barrier practice and jump outs
in a thoroughbred racing industry context.
People will be working under limited supervision with
responsibility for their work routines.

Competency for this unit standard can only be achieved when a New Zealand
Thoroughbred Racing Stipendiary Steward, or industry approved person, as specified
in the New Zealand Rules of Racing, is satisfied that the rider is proficient at riding
barrier practice and at jump outs.

Racetrack Bylaws can be obtained from the Secretary of the racing club where the
horses are working.

Evidence of competency must be achieved in the context of a commercial business
operation under normal working conditions and undertaken on a public training track.

The safety gear worn by the rider must meet the standards set by New Zealand
Thoroughbred Racing Inc, obtainable from New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Inc.

A rider can only be assessed after riding in at least three previous race occasions to
the satisfaction of a Steward

Evidence requirements
1.1
Rides the horse into the barriers and encourages it to stand quietly.
1.2
Jumps the horse out following starter’s orders and rides in a balanced position
in a straight line, in a controlled and safe manner.
1.3
Gives the horse maximum opportunity to perform to its optimum by persuading
it to move forward.
1.4
Pulls the horse up gradually and safely with consideration to all other horses
and riders.
1.5
Adheres to Racetrack Bylaws.
Outcome 2
Report on the horse’s performance during barrier practice and jump outs.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Provides a verbal report to the trainer or owners representative on the way in
which the horse performed, both physically and its mental attitude.
