NZQA registered unit standard 22358 version 2 Page 1 of 4 Title Ride thoroughbred racehorses at official trials to obtain a raceday licence Level 4 Purpose Credits 30 This unit standard is for apprentices who are seeking to gain their raceday licence through riding in trials and is a prerequisite for riders to ride raceday. People will be working under broad guidance with full responsibility for their work routines. Classification Equine>Equine Care Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Demonstration of competency must be consistent with: Raceday procedures within the relevant race club Racetrack bylaws The New Zealand Rules of Racing New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing standards for safety gear Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 Code of Welfare: Horses and Donkeys available at http://www.mpi.govt.nz. 2 Competency for this unit standard: Can only be achieved when an official New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Stipendiary Steward is satisfied that the rider is proficient and meets the required standards for a raceday licence in accordance with the New Zealand Rules of Racing. Must be provided in the context of a commercial business operation under normal working conditions and undertaken on a public race track 3 A rider must be licensed with NZ Thoroughbred Racing to ride in a trial, and must have a Class C license (probationer, pre apprentice stage) or minimum trackrider license and have approval from an official New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Stipendiary Steward. 4 A rider must be assessed competent on at least four occasions. Evidence requirements 1.1 Describes the purpose and methods for obtaining catch rides. 1.2 Prepares personal riding items as specified in the New Zealand Rules of Racing. 1.3 Describes individual race track features and racing conditions. Range may include but is not limited to - distance of racetrack, length of straight, contour of track, right hand/left hand track, running rail position, start positions, track conditions. 1.4 Provides relevant information to the Stipendiary Steward to obtain confirmation of trial riding assessment, for the purpose of obtaining a raceday licence. 1.5 Applies New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing regulations (5th appendix) for preparation for and riding at trials. Outcome 2 Undertake recognised industry protocol prior to riding in trials. Evidence requirements 2.1 Wears and carries the correct attire and riding gear, including industry requirements for personal gear. 2.2 Obtains riding instructions from the trainer or representatives. Outcome 3 Ride a horse at trials. Evidence requirements 3.1 Mounts the horse and makes adjustments to equipment for horse and rider safety and comfort. 3.2 Rides the horse to barriers as instructed by the trainer(s). 3.3 Describes variations to race club procedures for standard preliminary procedure. 3.4 Undertakes safety procedures prior to loading in the starting gates, loads the horse into the starting gates and requests assistance when necessary. 3.5 Jumps the horse out with reins at moderate length, maintaining balance and holding a true line when gates open. Primary Industry Training Organisation SSB Code 101558 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 22358 version 2 Page 3 of 4 3.6 Positions the horse in the field as instructed by trainers or representatives, within the guidelines of New Zealand Rules of Racing. 3.7 Obtains maximum performance from the horse throughout the trial race, without causing interference to other horses and jockeys. 3.8 Identifies and corrects problems associated with the horse’s performance. Outcome 4 Undertake post-trial procedures. Evidence requirements 4.1 Pulls the horse up and returns to the birdcage. 4.2 Follows race club procedures for returning. 4.3 Dismounts the horse and removes gear. 4.4 Relates details of the way in which the horse performed in the trial to the trainer or their representative clearly, concisely, and courteously.
