This unit standard is intended for people who are required to
gear up and drive standardbred horses at racing workouts and
trials held under the New Zealand Rules of Harness Racing.
People will be working under broad guidance with full
responsibility for their work routines.

empowered under the Racing Act 2003 to ensure compliance with the Rules of
Harness Racing


Candidates must demonstrate competency in the context of a commercial business
operation under normal working conditions.

To meet the requirements of this unit standard the number of drives required will be
determined by the Regional Licensing Committees.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Seek drives at harness racing workouts and trials.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Identifies suitable horses from within fields that match harness licencing
conditions.
1.2
Obtains, clarifies and confirms information clearly and concisely from the trainer
relevant to the horse and the race.

Promotes own abilities and suitability for the horse and the race.
Outcome 2
Prepare for drives at harness racing workouts and trials held under the New Zealand
Rules and Regulations of Harness Racing.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Gears up ensuring safety and correct function.
2.2
Obtains, clarifies, and confirms information regarding the horse and the workout
or trial, from the trainer.
2.3
Wears appropriate clothing for racing.
2.4
Drives the horse in the preliminary.
Outcome 3
Meet requirements of the New Zealand Rules and Regulations of Harness Racing start
and racing procedures.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Checks gear at starting point, and takes appropriate action if gear faults are
identified.
3.2
Starts the horse under instruction from starter, in order of barrier position.
3.3
Understands the procedure following a false start.
3.4
Drives the horse to the finish line following trainer’s instructions.
Outcome 4
Maintain records of drives at workouts and trials held under the New Zealand Rules and
Regulations of Harness Racing.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Maintains driving records.
