* Studio classes in the Art Department involve elaborate setup, clean up, and environmental and mechanical safety issues. This takes instructional
time from the beginning and end of each class session. For that reason it is Art Department’s policy that we meet four hours, rather than three hours,
for one unit of credit.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course builds upon skills acquired in Art 238. Students will continue to explore the creation of figurative
sculpture using traditional and contemporary materials and processes as they apply to the creation of more
complex figures and compositions. Students will continue to develop and refine their personal style and
aesthetic.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
Demonstrate a high level skill in the handling of figurative sculpture by using multifarious materials including
ceramic, wood, and mixed media.
Demonstrate knowledge of historical and contemporary subjects, techniques, and media.
Recognize, and evaluate 3D design issues and esthetics as they apply to the sculpture they create.
Demonstrate the ability to create large scale, or life-size sculpture.

25 % Expressive potential of sculpture.
25 % Assignments in 3-dimensional design, using images, plans, maquettes, and the live model.
25 % Research and creation of original sculptural works.
25 % Critique and review of projects, assigned readings and problems, including class discussions.
