Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Director, Small Business Consulting, reports to the Deputy Director, Northern Nevada Small Business Development Center (NSBDC) in the College of Business Administration (COBA) at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). The Director provides assistance to area small businesses, both in the startup and operating phases. The Director presents seminars and workshops and maintains relations with area organizations, lenders, businesses, and schools. The incumbent is responsible for delivery of semi-annual sub-center reviews and ensuring accuracy and completeness of MIS data. The Director also manages statewide counseling efforts and student intern program at the Reno office. In addition to the UNR campus location, the program has offices on the UNLV campus, Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, Great Basin College, Carson City Area Chamber of Commerce, Hi-Desert Development Authority, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Authority, Community College of Southern Nevada, and Churchill County Economic Development Authority. The total budget for the program from all sources (university, state, and federal government, contract research and the private sector) is currently $2.4 million. 2. Level of Freedom: The NSBDC/BBER is an entity with approximately $2.4 million budget. The NSDBC’s main service involves a business consulting service. The Director oversees statewide small business counseling efforts, is the only full-time counselor in the Reno Office, and is responsible for meeting client demand and generating economic impact for the state. Meeting annual counseling milestones is a requirement of our federal funding and the Director provides a large portion of the counseling hours needed to meet the requirements. Incumbent must work independently under minimal supervision and with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The individual works closely with, but with high latitude of independence in decision-making, the Deputy Director and State Director on decisions associated with the position. Impact: This position is very visible to the public and therefore has a direct impact on the perception of the NSBDC and university and its reputation. Inadequate performance has a detrimental effect on the achievement of objectives related to major center and university goals. Inadequate performance may result in contractual obligation failures and dissatisfaction resulting in loss of future funding. 4.
