Module MI211 2nd Year Microbiology Semester I Examination.
(Students must answer five of these eight questions within three hours.)
Q 1. Describe the structure and function of the Gram-negative cell envelope.
Q 2. Discuss the methods available for the study of bacterial cytology.
Q.3. Write notes on two of the following:
(i) Transport of sugars into bacterial cells;
(ii) Formation and function of high-energy compounds in microbial metabolism;
(iii) Enzyme/substrate interactions.
Q.4. Describe in detail the operation of the TCA cycle and discuss its significance
with respect to the growth of microorganisms on sugars.
Q 5. Give an account of the different types of growth media available for culturing
bacteria. In you answer outline the reasons that the different components are included
in the medium.
Q 6. Temperature control plays a major role in limiting the growth of microorganisms
in food. Discuss this statement with reference to at least 3 different types of
temperature control.
Q.7. Write an essay on “Gene Transcription”. In your answer include details on
transcription promoter and termination sequences.
Q.8. Write an essay describing the two types of gene transfer that are mediated by
bacteriophage.
